A Gasshuku with Bakkies Sensei, as we all know, is back to basics. After some training we got our feet back on the ground!  Like in real life there were moments of doubt, moments of confidence in ourselves and we also needed some perseverance. With some simple basics Sensei can demonstrate a real fight; we do not need a complex show.

I also had some private training with Sensei. We practiced Sanchin and Sesan, the day after, Tensho and Suparinpei. Trying to improve these Kata, as you all know, I had to train the basic movements in the Kata again and again. When you can feel improvement in the Kata practicing these basics, it gives you more confidence and motivation to train even harder.

Sensei has been in Belgium 8 times already an he inspires me every time again and his training also helps me to stay humble.

I hope he will return to Belgium next year in April so we can all profit from his knowledge. For many years he has been training with Higaonna Sensei  and I am convinced Bakkies Sensei is a teacher who tries to teach Karate in a traditional way, the way it is meant to be trained. He succeeds in saving the traditional art of Okinawan Goju-Ryu Karate and so he is an important Technical advisor for IOGKF now and in the future.

I am also grateful to my students; the Gasshuku could only be a success thanks to the participation of many.

Baie danke Bakkies Sensei and domo arigato gosaimashita Higaonna Sensei for  the beautiful art  we learn from you. I hope we can enjoy training with you both for many more years to come.
