September 2009 Writting Competition - NOW OPEN


Welcome to the new competition section of the IOGKF International Newsletter!

Here we will run challenges for our members, with the winners receiving prizes and publication for their efforts! For our first competition we are starting with a writing challenge!

Please answer the following question:

In 200 words or less, tell us what is the significance of the word ‘DO’ in Karate-Do and why should it be included with the word Karate?

Any IOGKF member can enter this competition!

A group of finalists will be narrowed down by our newsletter staff and the winner will then be selected from there by IOGKF Vice-Chief Instructor, Sensei Tetsuji Nakamura.

The winner will receive a copy of the 2008 Okinawan World Budosai, 2 Disc commemorative DVD set - exclusive to IOGKF International. Competition information and instructions:

  • Competition entries close midnight, Australian Eastern Standard time – October 31st, 2009
  • If entries exceed the 200 word limit they will not be accepted
  • All entrants must be willing to have their work published. The winner and two runners up will have their work published in the December issue of the IOGKF International Newsletter.
  • There is no age or rank limit on who can enter. 10th Kyu – 10th Dan!
    0 – 100 years old! Anyone is welcome!

  • Entrants must be registered members of the IOGKF in their country, if they posses a Kyu grade or registered with the IOGKF Administrative office if they possess a Dan grade. Unregistered entrants will not be submitted into the competition.
  • Emailed entries should be sent with the Authors Name, Age, Country, Dojo name, Instructors name and address clearly listed at the top of the page – with the subject line: IOGKF International – Sept 2009 writers competition. ***Please note only name, age (if under 20), Dojo name and country will be featured if your article is published. All other information will stay confidential***
  • If you submit an entry, you will receive a reply as confirmation of acceptance within 5 working days to the email address from which you submitted. If your entry is posted and you would like to receive a reply via post as a confirmation of your entry being accepted, please include a self addressed, stamped envelop.
  • All entries must be submitted in English. Spelling is not taken into account.
  • Images can be included with submitted items.
  • Entrants can enter as many times as they like, but each entry must be different from the last.


We are always looking for IOGKF related competition prizes. If you or your organization would like to donate a prize to IOGKF International as part of our competition section, we will mention your company in our Editors address and advertise a logo for your company (and website link if any) on this competition page.

IOGKF International has over 75,000 members in over 52 different countries, of which most of these members take the time to view this Newsletter. This is a good advertising and marketing opportunity for any company, organization or Dojo.
